Lake Gregory is a lake and is nearby to Huston Flat and Crestline. Lake Gregory has an elevation of 1388 metres, and is close to Lake Gregory 1803-003 Dam and east of Crest Line Park.

Hesperia Lake Park

Open year-round, the campground at Hesperia Lake Park lies 24 miles from Lake Gregory and can accommodate both RV and tent campers. Water and electric hookups are available at 30 campsites, and another 23 campsites have no hookups at all. The latter is best suited for self-contained RVs and tent campers. All campsites feature picnic tables and fire rings. Other campground facilities include a camp store, propane service, showers, restrooms and fishing (additional fee).

Dogwood

Open from May through October, Dogwood Campground (fs.usda.gov) sits at 5,600 feet in the San Bernardino Forest about five miles from Lake Gregory. Pines and firs shade the campground, and dogwood blooms in spring. The 15-minute drive from Lake Gregory on Highway 18, Rim of the World Highway, provides panoramic views of San Bernardino.

The 87 campsites include tent-only, self-contained RV and RV electric hook-up sites. Toast marshmallows over the fire ring and prepare meals at the picnic table included at each site. Drinking water is on tap; restrooms have flush toilets, and showers deliver hot water. Rangers lead interpretive programs on Friday and Saturday nights, and campers can take what they learn about the flora and fauna to the loop trails around the campgrounds. Pets on leashes are welcome. Bears think they are too, so you must store your food in approved bear-proof containers, as detailed in the USDA Forest Service’s article “Be Bear Aware in Bear Country.” Reserve campsites at least three days in advance using the link or phone number on the campground’s website.

Mission RV Park

Reserved exclusively for RV camping, Mission RV Park, near Redlands, is 25 miles from Lake Gregory Regional Park. Nearby attractions include Miller Canyon Trail, Scott Canyon and Redlands Country Club, which features an 18-hole championship golf course. The campground’s 79 campsites have full hookups, including cable TV. Other amenities include showers, restrooms, a coin-operated guest laundry, a dump station and paved patio areas at each campsite. Most pets are welcome but check with the management in advance as there are some restrictions on size and breed.

Silverwood Lake

Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area (parks.ca.gov) is about 11 miles, or 20 minutes, from Lake Gregory and sits at 3,350 feet just below the transition from San Bernardino County’s High Desert to its mountain regions. Oaks shade the lake’s shoreline, while high above the lake pine and fir trees create a green landscape along the highway.

From May through September, the area’s campgrounds accommodate up to 135 RV and tent campers. Drinking water, showers and restrooms, and at some sites, RV hookups, are available. The marina has a convenience store. Pets on leashes are welcome. Unlike Lake Gregory, Silverwood is busy with motorboats and jet skis in summer. Before heading to Lake Gregory or after a fun day there, enjoy a morning or evening walk on one of Silverwood’s many shaded trails that meander around the lake and along the creeks. San Bernardino National Forest Campgrounds

The sprawling San Bernardino National Forest covers more than 675,000 acres in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Among its many campgrounds, two – Dogwood and North Shore – are within an easy drive of Lake Gregory. Both Dogwood and North Shore campgrounds also lie close to Lake Arrowhead. Dogwood, six miles from Lake Gregory, has 93 campsites, 49 of which are reserved for tent campers. Other facilities include drinking-water supplies, hot showers and flush toilets. North Shore, 11.5 miles from Lake Gregory, has 27 sites, 13 of which are reserved for tents. Potable water and flush toilets are available at North Shore.

Camp Switzerland

Even though it’s practically across the street from Lake Gregory, Camp Switzerland (campswitzerland.net) is easily overlooked. The private campground is nestled in a forest at the bottom of a side street. It closes in fall and opens when the owners decide to open, which is often in May. Campsites are set up for tents and RVs. The showers and restrooms are coin-operated and rustic but very clean. Small dogs are usually allowed — but check with the owners about specific pet requirements. Campers may hike on the trails and cross the creek on a footbridge. Each campsite is bordered with fencing or trees and shrubs for privacy. Quiet hours are strictly enforced at this peaceful campground. Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area

The campground at Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, 12 miles from Lake Gregory, welcomes both RV and tent campers. The campground’s 130 campsites have no hookups and thus are suitable only for self-contained RVs and tent camping. Facilities available within the state recreation area include a convenience store, fire rings, picnic tables, pay showers, restrooms and a dump station. Recreational opportunities abound and include lake swimming and fishing, boating, kayaking, a boat launch ramp, hiking trails and a dock.

Considerations

Summer days in the mountain areas near Lake Gregory are pleasant, averaging 75 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit, but bring snuggly clothes for the evening when temperatures dip to the 40s and 50s. If you plan to fish in the mountains, check with the specific campground or lake’s website to see if a state fishing license is required. The towns of Crestline, Blue Jay and Village of Lake Arrowhead have stores, restaurants and shops where you can purchase fishing and camping supplies. About an hour’s drive from Lake Gregory, Big Bear Valley has larger stores, including a Big 5 Sporting Goods (big5sportinggoods.com) store — where you can buy a fishing license — along with the Discovery Center (mountainsfoundation.org) where learning about the area’s flora and fauna is free and fun.
