Uses

Overview of Clindamycin (Antirobe®, Cleocin®) for Dogs and Cats

• Clindamycin, commonly known by the brand names of Antirobe® and Cleocin®, is an antibiotic that is used in dogs and cats.
• Clindamycin inhibits bacteria by suppressing protein synthesis and growth. Erythromycin and its derivatives share a similar mechanism of action.
• Clindamycin is similar to the drug lincomycin (Lincocin).
• Clindamycin is effective against a narrow range of bacteria in dogs and cats. It is effective against bacteria that infect the skin, oral cavity, bone and respiratory tract.
• Clindamycin is a prescription drug and can only be obtained from a veterinarian or by prescription from a veterinarian.

Clindamycin for Dogs and Cats

Veterinarians may prescribe clindamycin to treat the following conditions in dogs or cats when they are caused by dangerous bacteria:

• Skin infections
• Deep wounds
• Abscesses
• Tooth infections
• A serious bone infection called osteomyelitis, to try to prevent bacteria from spreading into the bloodstream

Clindamycin prescriptions for dogs and cats normally come in liquid form to be given by mouth.

• This drug is registered for use in animals and humans.
• Human formulations: Cleocin® (Upjohn)
• Veterinary formulations: Antirobe® (Upjohn)

Clindamycin for Acne

Clindamycin can be applied to the skin to treat acne. It comes in lotion, cream, or gel form under the name Cleocin T or clindamycin phosphate.

For the best results, wait 30 minutes after washing your face or affected area before applying clindamycin to the skin. Your skin may become a little sensitive while using clindamycin, so be sure to use gentle cleansers and moisturizers that will not irritate it further.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

Do not share this medication with others.

This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection unless your doctor tells you to.

If you are using this drug for a longer time, laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., kidney/liver function tests, blood counts) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip themissed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

Precautions

US BOXED WARNING(S):

-Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with the use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including clindamycin and may range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon leading to overgrowth of C difficile.

-Because clindamycin therapy has been associated with severe colitis which may end fatally, it should be reserved for serious infections where less toxic antimicrobial agents are inappropriate. It should not be used in patients with nonbacterial infections such as most upper respiratory tract infections.

-C difficile produces toxins A and B which contribute to the development of CDAD. Hypertoxin producing strains of C difficile cause increased morbidity and mortality, as these infections can be refractory to antimicrobial therapy and may require colectomy. CDAD must be considered in all patients who present with diarrhea following antibiotic use.

-Careful medical history is necessary since CDAD has been reported to occur over two months after the administration of antibacterial agents. If CDAD is suspected or confirmed, ongoing antibiotic use not directed against C difficile may need to be discontinued. Appropriate fluid and electrolyte management, protein supplementation, antibiotic treatment of C difficile, and surgical evaluation should be instituted as clinically indicated.

Liver Dose Adjustments

No adjustment recommended; however, liver function monitoring is recommended in patients with severe liver disease. Accumulation of clindamycin has not been demonstrated when dosed every 8 hours.
