Cómo plantar un cedro

Cuando quieres plantar algún árbol en tu jardín, tienes una amplia variedad entre la que poder elegir, cada una de ellas con diferentes características para que así se adapten a tus necesidades. Una de las mejores opciones es el cedro, el cual puede llegar a alcanzar los 30 metros de altura y tiene una apariencia espectacular.

Plantar un cedro

Lo primero que tienes que elegir cuando quieras plantar un cedro es su ubicación, que tiene que ser la más adecuada para este tipo de árbol. El cedro crece mucho, con lo que no es recomendable para un jardín pequeño ya que necesitará mucho espacio para poder desarrollarse y alcanzar su máximo esplendor.

Una vez elegido el sitio, hay que hacer el hoyo de plantación. Si tienes césped en esa zona hay que quitar una buena capa, marcando la zona que será el hoyo con una pala. Para quitar el césped utiliza una azada y ve quitándolo de forma horizontal. Después haz varios agujeros con una pala vertical hasta llegar a la parte en la que la tierra cambia de color, que es cuando ya pararás de cavar ya que habrás alcanzado los 40 centímetros.

El siguiente paso es plantar el árbol, metiendo primero sustrato universal y después colocando el árbol en el centro, siendo muy importante que quede totalmente en vertical. Si tienes el cepellón envuelto con una malla para que esté más protegido, aflójala un poco para que no tenga problemas al crecer, y si ves que es mucha puedes quitarla para que esté más liberado.

Lo último será mejorar la tierra, para lo que es recomendable añadir un abono orgánico. No vuelvas a poner el césped que quitaste ya que sus raíces podrían ser perjudiciales para el crecimiento del cedro.

Diferentes maneras de plantar un cedro

Es una conífera que puedes plantar de diferentes maneras:

• En cepellón
• A raíz desnuda
• En una maceta (o cualquier otro recipiente)

Dependiendo de la forma elegida tendrás más o menos tiempo para plantar el cedro. En el caso de ser a raíz desnuda, tendrás que plantarlo inmediatamente para que no se muera, mientras que si lo haces con un cepellón tendrás unas dos semanas para poder plantarlo.

En el caso de hacerlo en maceta o en cualquier otro recipiente, podrás hacerlo en cualquier momento del año y sin tiempo límite.

Building a cedar planter box

Building the corner posts

The first step of the project is to build the four posts of the planter box. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to build the posts using 2×2 lumber. If you want to enhance the look of the legs, you should make several cuts inside the lumber.

Take accurate measurements before making the cuts using a circular saw. The decorative cuts should be 1/4″ deep. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cloth.

Attaching the cedar slats

The next step of the project is to attach the sides components to the planter box, as shown in the image. If you want to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and insert the screws in the posts, after aligning them at both ends.

If you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure, we recommend you to add waterproof glue to the joints of the planter. Make sure the corners are right-angled.

Attaching the bottom

Fitting the bottom to the planter is one of the last steps of the woodworking project. Cut the slat at the right size and fit it between the walls of the planter. Add waterproof glue to the joints, before inserting the screws into the side components.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the cedar planter in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
